Situated off the east coast of the Malaysia Peninsula, just west of Anambas, Tioman Island is probably the most well-known of the Seri Buat archipelago islands. This pearl of the exotic island chain neighbor of Anambas is actually an evergreen in the various editions of the popular Survival-type reality shows broadcast in many countries.
Although Tioman Island is arguably best known for its wide range of hotels, resorts and guest houses, catering to all kinds of travelers some travel experts have pointed out that it's actually Tioman's natural environment that is its most magnetic asset, its picture-perfect setting, its flora and its fauna.
In fact, thanks to the island's stunning surroundings and its famous paradise beaches, Tioman was once given the title "World's Top 10 Most Beautiful Island" by Time Magazine.
Take Tioman Island's primary rainforest for example. This thick green jungle covers in excess of 10,000 hectares of the island and its still-pristine terrestrial ecosystems, various fresh-water streams and half-dozen hidden waterfalls are home to a fair number of exotic animal and plant species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and various invertebrates.
Interestingly, some of Tioman Island's animal ands plants species are actually endemic to Tioman Island, meaning they aren't found anywhere else in the world.
Tioman Island also offers some of the most panoramic beaches and breathtaking coves in the region.
Apart from the so-called "Dragon's Horns", which for centuries was used by swashbuckling seafarers as a navigational beacon, Tioman Island's highest peak is the summit of Mount Kajang. The local name for this 1000+ meter high mountain is Gunung Kajang and it is actually an inactive volcano.
But Tioman's one-of-a-kind natural splendour has much more to offer. Its surrounding sea, for instance, is some of the clearest you'll ever see. And its many coral species, both hard and soft coral, are testament to the water's cleanliness and transparency.
Tioman Island's magnificent sub aquatic ecosystems are home to fish, turtles and several species of dolphins and larger cetaceans.
Speaking of large sea creatures, even whale sharks are spotted around the Tioman Island area every now and again. Their seasonal migrations taking them up and down the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
With all this richness below the water level, it's small wonder that Tioman Island is renown for being a snorkeler and scubadiver paradise.
But that being said, clearly, Tioman is a versatile holiday island. Whether you're a sun-worshipper, a mountain-climber, or into jungle-trekking or water sports, or you just want to spend a tranquillity-filled weekend in a timeless paradise, it's safe to say that Tioman Island is the place to be.
